Relative to the Officer Samuel Sanchez Memorial Highway.
LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST
SCR 12, as amended, Jackson. Officer Samuel Sanchez Memorial
Highway.
This measure would designate a portion of State Highway Route 166
in the County of Santa Barbara as the Officer Samuel Sanchez Memorial
Highway. The measure would also request the Department of
Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing
this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate
sources covering the cost, to erect those signs.

WHEREAS, The Guadalupe Police Department is the primary law
enforcement agency charged with protecting and serving the 7,080
citizens in the City of Guadalupe, California; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Sanchez was born on April 6, 1944, into a large
California native family of nine children, with six of his siblings
in law enforcement; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Sanchez was sworn into the Guadalupe Police
Department on November 11, 1965, and served the City of Guadalupe for
four years alongside his brother, Elias Sanchez; and
WHEREAS, On April 13, 1969, while transporting two
three prisoners to jail, Officer Sanchez was
killed in a head-on collision with a driver under the influence on
State Highway Route 166; and
WHEREAS, Officer Sanchez was survived by one infant daughter,
Kristen Sanchez; and
WHEREAS, It is appropriate to memorialize the service and
sacrifice of Officer Sanchez, as a sign of respect and recognition to
his friends and family members who are left behind, by designating a
portion of State Highway Route 166 in the County of Santa Barbara in
his honor; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the
portion of State Highway Route 166 from Bonita School Road to Simas
Road in the County of Santa Barbara as the Officer Samuel Sanchez
Memorial Highway; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to
determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the signing
requirements for the state highway system showing this special
designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources
sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this
resolution to the Director of Transportation and the author for
appropriate distribution.
