HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
urging the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands to provide land for the development of a race track in the Ewa district on the island of Oahu.
WHEREAS, racing has a rich history in Hawaii, with drag racing on the island of Oahu dating back to the early 1950's; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii Raceway Park, which opened for operation in Campbell Industrial Park in 1962 and closed in 2006, provided a safe and supervised location for people to operate a variety of vehicles, including drag racing cars, motorcycles, go karts, and street cars; and
WHEREAS, the recent closure of Kalaeloa Raceway Park, which operated on lands owned by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, left the island of Oahu without a four-wheeled motorsports venue; and
WHEREAS, a race track on the island of Oahu would help support small businesses in the surrounding area and generate revenue for the State; and
WHEREAS, a race track on the island of Oahu would provide a gathering place for local racers and racing enthusiasts, as well as attract tourists; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, the Senate concurring, that the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands is urged to provide land for the development of a race track in the Ewa district on the island of Oahu; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature requests that the land provided by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands be large enough to accommodate a quarter-mile drag race track and a circular track; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Hawaiian Homes Commission and the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu.
