HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Juan Salgado on the
4occasion of being named as a MacArthur Fellow; and
5 WHEREAS, The MacArthur Fellows Program awards unrestricted
6fellowships to talented individuals who have shown
7extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative
8pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction; Fellows are
9selected based on their exceptional creativity, promise for
10important future advances based on a track record of
11significant accomplishment, and potential for the fellowship
12to facilitate subsequent creative work; and
13 WHEREAS, Juan Salgado earned his bachelor's degree in
14economics from Illinois Wesleyan University and his master's
15degree in urban planning from the University of Illinois at
16Urbana-Champaign; and
17 WHEREAS, Juan Salgado has served as President and CEO of
18the Instituto del Progreso Latino since 2001; during his
19tenure, he has led the organization through a period of
20national award winning recognition and historic organizational
21growth spurred by a focus on creating partnerships, enhancing
22core competencies, leading innovation, providing quality

1services, and participating in targeted advocacy; and
2 WHEREAS, Under Juan Salgado's direction, the Instituto del
3Progreso Latino has established national best-practice
4educational and workforce models and was selected as the
5National Council of La Raza's Affiliate of the Year in 2009;
6the Instituto also founded the Instituto Health Sciences Career
7Academy, a new charter high school aimed at inspiring and
8preparing Chicago's youth for success in the growing healthcare
9fields; and
10 WHEREAS, Juan Salgado was a 2005 Fellow in the Leadership
11Greater Chicago program for emerging leaders of business,
12government, and non-profit corporations and a 2007 Fellow for
13the Aspen Institute Ideas Festival; he served as an advisor to
14the President of Mexico through the Institute for Mexicans
15Abroad for 3 years; he is also a member of the Chicago
16Manufacturing Renaissance Council Executive Board, the
17Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and
18Leadership Greater Chicago Board of Directors, and the Adler
19School of Professional Psychology Board of Trustees; and
20 WHEREAS, Juan Salgado was the recipient of the Mexican
21American Legal Defense and Education Fund's Excellence in
22Community Service Award in 2010; and

1 WHEREAS, Juan Salgado serves as a model of hard work,
2integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of
3Illinois; therefore, be it
4 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
6congratulate Juan Salgado on the occasion of being named as a
7MacArthur Fellow and wish him continued success and happiness
8in the future; and be it further
9 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to Juan Salgado as a symbol of our esteem and
11respect.
