2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Constance Lee Goode, Ph.D. of Rockford, | ||||||
4 | who passed away on April 14, 2015; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Dr. Goode was born in Chicago on August 9, 1938 to | ||||||
6 | Leroy and Emma (nee Barbee) Boyd; she grew up in the church at | ||||||
7 | Prairie Avenue Baptist, playing piano for Sunday school and | ||||||
8 | church services; she graduated from Englewood High School in | ||||||
9 | 1956; she received her Bachelor of Arts from Illinois State | ||||||
10 | University in 1959, her master's degree in counseling from | ||||||
11 | Northern Illinois University in 1971, and her Doctorate in | ||||||
12 | Continuing Adult Education from the University of | ||||||
13 | Wisconsin-Madison in 1982; additionally, she studied music at | ||||||
14 | the Chicago Conservatory of Music and loved all kinds of music; | ||||||
15 | and

16 | WHEREAS, Dr. Goode's vocational experiences included the | ||||||
17 | St. Charles Detention Center For Boys, where she was an | ||||||
18 | Occupational Therapist; the Singer Zone Center, where she was a | ||||||
19 | social worker; the Office of Economic Opportunity, where she | ||||||
20 | served as the Director of Outreach; the Rockford Board of | ||||||
21 | Education, where she was a teacher, counselor, and | ||||||
22 | administrator; the Booker Washington Center, where she served | ||||||
23 | as the Executive Director; and Northern Illinois University, |

1 | where she was a professor in Curriculum and Instruction; | ||||||
2 | although she served in many capacities, her first love was | ||||||
3 | teaching and counseling; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Dr. Goode marched for civil rights alongside the | ||||||
5 | late Dr. E. H. E. Gilbert in the 1960s and fought for those who | ||||||
6 | were not always able to fight for themselves, particularly as | ||||||
7 | it relates to issues affecting women and people of color; she | ||||||
8 | was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church and several | ||||||
9 | organizations, including the NAACP, TAUS, and Alpha Kappa Alpha | ||||||
10 | Sorority, Inc.; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Dr. Goode was recently honored with a Selah Award | ||||||
12 | for her work as an African-American woman educator; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Dr. Goode was preceded in death by her parents; | ||||||
14 | and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Dr. Goode is survived by her husband, Alphonso; | ||||||
16 | her son, Andre (Kimberley); her daughter, Alicia (Zeather | ||||||
17 | Gladney); her grandchildren, Krystalyn, Garrison, Gabriella, | ||||||
18 | and Kaylyn; and a host of dear friends, card buddies, and | ||||||
19 | former students whose lives were touched by her passion for | ||||||
20 | excellent; therefore, be it

21 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL |

1 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
2 | Constance Lee Goode, Ph.D., and extend our sincere condolences | ||||||
3 | to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be | ||||||
4 | it further
| ||||||
5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
6 | presented to the family of Dr. Goode as an expression of our | ||||||
7 | deepest sympathy.
