A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION to honor and congratulate the State of Israel on the occasion of its sixty-fifth anniversary and strongly support the Jewish State's inherent right to act in self-defense to protect its citizens from terrorism.

Whereas, Israel was born as an independent nation on May 14, 1948, as a democratic Jewish state, built on the framework of liberty, justice, and peace;

Whereas, Israel has much to commemorate and celebrate, most notably the fact that it has established, in a short time and in the face of intractable opposition and hostility, a free, modern, and politically stable nation;

Whereas, Israel is a leading contributor in the world toward the advancement of agriculture, computer sciences, electronics, genetics, medicine, engineering, and arts and culture;

Whereas, As a true democracy, Israel gives voice and power to its people and continues to do so as a matter of course even as thousands of rockets have targeted Israeli cities; and

Whereas, In spite of continued aggression in recent years, Israel continues to stand united with America as beacons for liberty, democracy, and freedom: Therefore,

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly congratulates and salutes the State of Israel, one of America's most reliable and valuable allies, on the occasion of its 65th anniversary.
    SECTION 2. That the Indiana General Assembly expresses its unwavering commitment to the security of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state with secure borders, and recognizes and strongly supports its inherent right to act in self-defense to protect its citizens against acts of terrorism.
    SECTION 3. That copies of this resolution be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to the Consul General of Israel to the Midwest, Roey Gilad, and to the Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for Israel's accomplishments and strength, as well as best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous future.
