1.
Section
724.6,
subsection
1,
paragraph
a,
Code

2020,
is
amended
to
read
as
follows:

a.
(1)
A
person
may
be
issued
a
permit
to
carry
weapons
3
when
the
person’s
employment
in
a
private
investigation
4
business
or
private
security
business
licensed
under
chapter
5
80A
,
or
a
person’s
employment
as
a
peace
officer,
correctional
6
officer,
security
guard,
bank
messenger
or
other
person
7
transporting
property
of
a
value
requiring
security,
or
in
8
police
work,
reasonably
justifies
that
person
going
armed.

(2)
A
person
may
be
issued
a
permit
to
carry
weapons
10
if
the
person
is
an
emergency
medical
care
provider
who
is
11
designated
and
attached
to
a
law
enforcement
tactical
team
by
12
the
authorities
having
jurisdiction.
A
person
issued
a
permit
13
to
carry
weapons
under
this
paragraph
shall
train
with
the
law
14
enforcement
tactical
team
the
person
is
designated
and
attached
15
to,
complete
a
prescribed
firearm
safety
training
course
16
offered
pursuant
to
section
724.9,
subsection
1,
paragraph
17
“e”
,
complete
any
additional
training
as
prescribed
by
the
18
authorities
having
jurisdiction,
and
not
be
disqualified
under
19
section
724.8.

2.
Section
724.6,
subsection
2,
Code
2020,
is
amended

to
read
as
follows:

Notwithstanding
subsection
1
,
fire
fighters,
as
defined
23
in
section
411.1,
subsection
10
,
airport
fire
fighters
included
24
under
section
97B.49B
,
and
emergency
medical
care
providers
,
25
as
defined
in
section
147A.1
other
than
emergency
medical
26
care
providers
specified
in
subsection
1,
paragraph
“a”
,
27
subparagraph
(2)
,
shall
not,
as
a
condition
of
employment,
28
be
required
to
obtain
a
permit
under
this
section
.
However,
29
the
provisions
of
this
subsection
shall
not
apply
to
a
person
30
designated
as
an
arson
investigator
by
the
chief
fire
officer
31
of
a
political
subdivision.

3.
Section
724.6,
Code
2020,
is
amended
by
adding
the
33
following
new
subsection:

this
section,

care
provider”
means
the
same
as
defined
in
section
1
147A.1.

EXPLANATION
3
The
inclusion
of
this
explanation
does
not
constitute
agreement
with
4
the
explanation’s
substance
by
the
members
of
the
general
assembly.

This
bill
relates
to
persons
eligible
to
obtain
a
6
professional
permit
to
carry
weapons.
7
Current
law
restricts
persons
eligible
to
obtain
a
8
professional
permit
to
carry
weapons
to
certain
individuals
9
involved
with
investigation,
security,
valuable
property
10
transportation,
corrections,
and
other
police
work
if
the
11
individual’s
occupation
reasonably
justifies
the
individual
12
going
armed.
The
bill
allows
an
emergency
medical
care
13
provider
to
obtain
a
professional
permit
to
carry
weapons
if
14
the
emergency
medical
care
provider
is
designated
and
attached
15
to
a
law
enforcement
tactical
team
by
the
authorities
having
16
jurisdiction.
Additionally,
the
emergency
medical
care
17
provider
shall
train
with
the
law
enforcement
tactical
team,
18
complete
a
firearm
safety
training
course
that
qualifies
a
19
peace
officer
to
carry
a
firearm
in
the
normal
course
of
the
20
peace
officer’s
duties,
complete
any
additional
training
as
21
prescribed
by
the
authorities
having
jurisdiction,
and
not
be
22
disqualified
from
obtaining
a
professional
or
nonprofessional
23
permit
to
carry
weapons.
Notwithstanding
a
general
24
prohibition,
the
bill
allows
an
employer
of
an
emergency
25
medical
care
provider
to
require
an
emergency
medical
care
26
provider
to
obtain
a
professional
permit
to
carry
weapons
as
a
27
condition
of
employment
if
the
emergency
medical
care
provider
28
accompanies
police
tactical
teams
consistent
with
the
bill.
29
By
operation
of
law,
a
professional
permit
to
carry
weapons
30
will
authorize
an
emergency
medical
care
provider
to
go
armed
31
anywhere
in
the
state
only
while
engaged
in
employment
and
32
while
going
to
and
from
the
place
of
employment.
An
emergency
33
medical
care
provider
shall
submit
an
application
and
undergo
34
a
criminal
history
background
check
prior
to
receiving
a

professional
permit
to
carry
weapons.
A
professional
permit
1
to
carry
weapons
issued
to
an
emergency
medical
care
provider
2
shall
expire
12
months
after
the
date
of
issue.
