Charlotte Koehler Flynn |
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
commemorates the life of activist and community leader Charlotte |
|
Koehler Flynn, who died April 19, 2015, at the age of 96; and |
|
WHEREAS, Charlotte Flynn was born on March 28, 1919, in |
|
Saint Louis, Missouri, to Charlotte and Arnold Koehler; she |
|
earned a degree in nursing from Washington University; and |
|
WHEREAS, She married Bill Flynn in 1941, and they enjoyed |
|
more than 65 years of marriage together; they raised three |
|
children, Liz, Mary Lou, and Greg, and were blessed with two |
|
granddaughters; and |
|
WHEREAS, After moving frequently for many years due to |
|
Mr. Flynn's career in the United States Navy, the family settled |
|
in Austin in 1970; as she had done many times before, Mrs. Flynn |
|
became involved in the local Girl Scout council, but she soon |
|
expanded her focus to include social justice advocacy; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Flynn was a founding member of the Austin |
|
chapter of the Gray Panthers and is largely credited with saving |
|
the national organization when she served as its chair during the |
|
1990s; she was a spokesperson for the National Campaign for |
|
Universal Health Care, an initiative of the Gray Panthers; she |
|
was also active with the Texas Coalition for Juvenile Justice and |
|
the Austin Peace and Justice Coalition; and |
|
WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she |
|
gave unselfishly to others, and her indomitable will, her |
|
integrityandforthrightness,andherenthusiasmforlivingeach |
|
|
day to the fullest will not be forgotten by those who were |
|
privileged to share in her life; and |
|
WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, |
|
and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by |
|
her family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|
family of Charlotte Koehler Flynn; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
memory of Charlotte Koehler Flynn. |
